What You Want to be when You Grow Up: A Hospital Helper/Fire Helper
Finley at four is about as sweet as ever. She really is so well mannered. Not that she doesn't have the occasional frustrating moments - her latest thing is to stomp up to her room and lay on the floor dramatically whining when I'm "so mean!". Hahaha. Most of these episodes end with her just wanting a big hug.
She has really matured around people and her crazy baby voice that she used when she was really shy has for the most part disappeared (thank Jesus!). She still makes friends with most kids she meets - preschool, church classroom, or the workout childcare center.
Her eating has gotten so much better. She is by no means an adventurous eater, but she will try most things if we give her the ultimatum : ) The only thing that she doesn't like is fresh chicken (nuggets are fine - ha) and most veggies. Preschool has been so good for her eating habits. I think there is some aspect of peer pressure and also the teachers really encourage trying new things, so she's come home liking tacos, soup, ketchup, and sloppy joes!
She has also been learning her manners at school, which is usually great...She leads us in a short prayer most nights before dinner, but also makes sure to tell us frequently "don't talk with your mouth full, mama!"
Finley is much more helpful around the house these days. She is saving up for an Elsa dress (from Frozen) and some of her jobs are to bring her dishes to the sink, put her dirty clothes in the hamper, and clean up her room.
She has also been learning about being generous in the latest series at church, so she will frequently ask what she can do to be generous. She thinks all of my suggestions are okay, except sharing toys with her sister!
She is currently in gymnastics and plans to play soccer again this summer. We got out the mini-trampoline recently and she's enjoyed jumping for hours on end. She wants a jump rope for Easter, so maybe we have some double dutch in our future...
Finley is great at writing her name and is starting to write other names if we can spell them to her. She is so proud that she can count to 40, but still forgets the number 15 almost everytime! She loves to draw people and today learned how to draw a leprechaun. She also spends a lot of time cutting up paper to make various pretend items - food, tickets, valentines, etc. I try to foster this creativity, but secretly the little paper scraps kind of drive me nuts.
We have talked a lot about not cutting hair or skin. I noticed a few weeks ago that her pajamas had slits at the ankles and wrists - I guess she was hot! I do a nightly scissor check now.
We are so proud of the little girl she has grown up to be. She is still happy to snuggle and watch a movie and takes naps most days - even if it's just a short one (her favorite kind). She is so independent, often playing up in her room for an hour or more without any intervention from us. She knows all of the words to the Frozen soundtrack (actually, so do we!) and loves to dress-up in her heels, a dress, and twirl around. Her biggest wishes for the next year are for a dog (hmmm, probably not going to happen) and to get her ears pierced (maybe when she's five?)
Tonight she asked us what our dreams were:
Me: that spring would come soon and all of the snow would melt so we could go to the park
Pat: to win the lottery
Finley: to be able to put a whole pizza in my mouth.
I can't get enough of the conversations we have with her - they are so hilarious and insightful.
We love her to pieces.
