Finley is still charming as ever. I don't think we can have a second baby because she has spoiled us. Generally - she sleeps well, entertains herself, is mostly always happy, and is running/jumping/laughing most of the day.
(Finley at Grandma's garden, with her favorite friend - the gnome, and wearing a dress my mom saved from when I was a toddler)
Here's what's new:
Finley's verbal skills have really picked up in the last few weeks - she can repeat everything which is so fun because I keep giving her tricky words to say (like Chameleon). Some words she can say on her own are: up please, all done, night night, I love you (too), eat, juice, Gus, Moosh, Nini, Grandma JoJo, Grandpa, shoes, open, out, toys, what's that, who's that, Mama, Papa, Pat, Kristin, more, 1 2 3 Go, Hoorah, Ashes (from ring around the rosy), hi, hello, bye bye, cheese, and num nums.
She is still a fairly picky eater, but this has gotten a whole lot better since 15 months. Textures and appearances are still the main things that turn her off from a food - even if she's eaten it the day before and loved it. It remains my summer goal of getting her to love PB and J like every other kid - just because it would make my life so easy and would give her some protein. Right now it's hit or miss. Her loves right now are cheese, yogurt, raisins, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, toast, pancakes/french toast, any kind of fruit - nectarines lately, pizza, pasta, corn dogs, and french fries.
She loves tupperware sippy cups and water bottles at the moment. Milk is still her favorite drink. She wants to use a spoon and fork so bad. She hints to us to put the food on the spoon so she can put it in her mouth or she uses her hands to put the food on there. She is getting more successful with using them as they are designed.
She is going to bed about 7, but does tolerate staying up until about 8:30 if we're doing something fun, like a pool party. She wakes up between 6-7:30am which is actually when I wake up, so it works.
She has, for the most part, given up her morning nap, although she will fall asleep in the car around 10 if we are going somewhere and I'd say one morning a week she will take a nap in her crib in the morning. Her afternoon nap is about 2-3 hours so I can't complain. She basically puts herself down - grabs gus and lays her head on the floor if she's tired and I just lay her in the crib and she's out. I don't do a lot of things right as a mom, but one of my biggest successes has been teaching her to fall asleep on her own.
Finley gets a book or two before bed (current favorites are Corduroy and If You Give a Pig a Party...), some snuggle time with dad, and we sing "You are My Sunshine" - which I swear she is learning the words to.
She went through a phase a few weeks ago where she hated baths and would scream bloody murder and be shaking in the bath. This started after she had been playing in the pool so I'm not sure if she was mad that it wasn't the pool or what. I bought some of those foam letters and she is now in our big tub and seems to like it, but she prefers to squat and not sit???
She can imitate brushing her teach - though I don't know that she is actually cleaning her teeth!
Small tantrums have started, mostly at home, like when her raisins are all gone, I won't let her play on top of her wagon, etc. Her body goes limp and she lays on the floor. I have to hide my laughing, usually.
She still has her nuk, only at naps/bed, and long car trips. My grand plan is to get rid of it after our family vacation to Florida in November, because flying without it sounds crazy!!!
Her bangs are almost grownout to tuck behind her ear, but she wears a bow or pony most days.
She has started using crayons, with her LEFT hand!! I am ecstatic about toddler arts and crafts so this is a big milestone for me.
She has adjusted to daycare and now goes in and doesn't even look my way when I say goodbye : )
She dislikes her carseat and stroller because she just wants to MOVE. I can't blame her.
She can run, spin, jump, and do a combo of all 3. I am thinking of signing her up for gymnastics this fall.
She is currently in music class and is getting better at following directions, but she is usually in the middle of the circle dancing to her own beat! It is teaching her how to share and she has recently picked up the word "MINE" and bopped a little boy on the head with a maraca last week when he tried to take her drum.
17 month stats:
Length: 31"
Weight: 24 pounds
Both were around the 50%ile which is the highest she's been on the charts since her birth - yay!
